Visit to Narcisse Snake Pits

This is an easy day trip from Winnipeg with one of Manitoba’s most extraordinary seasonal wildlife encounters at its heart. The drive across the prairie builds the anticipation before you arrive to see thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerging from their limestone dens in spring. It feels distinctly Manitoban, memorable and manageable in a single day.

We travelled in May, when the spring emergence was under way. Arrive earlier in the day for quieter trails and allow time to walk the self-guided paths between the four dens. The site is free to visit, with parking and basic facilities, but services nearby are limited, so bring water, snacks and layers. Stay on the paths, keep hands out of the dens and supervise children closely. The snakes are harmless, but the ground can be muddy after rain. Check seasonal conditions before setting off, as activity depends on the weather.
